PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
This is a big year for Demeter with $48,000 planned in student support toward 25 student awards among which three new awards will be offered for the first time! The steady growth of the eight UW Foundation endowment funds that benefit our organization and its program of student support are a tribute to all those generous individuals who have invested in CALS in the name of Demeter. Annual cash donations will support grants to several student organizations in CALS as well as one internship this coming academic year.
I would like to announce the new Maxwell Endowment which supports a student research award in plant or microbial science. Doug and I got started in research as undergraduates working on research projects that were life changing experiences leading us into careers as research scientists. The Maxwell award will allow one student each year to have such an experience in our college! Thank you to Martha and Doug Maxwell for their foresight and largesse!
I am proud to lead Demeter in this time of abundance and giving! On a more sobering note, some members have lost loved ones in the last year. Our friend and colleague Jeff Martin passed away suddenly in December. His many contributions to Demeter and the Corn Roast event and his friendship will be deeply missed!
