Kemp Research Station A Demeter Connection
Kemp Research Station located in Tomahawk in northern Wisconsin is a place where scientists, students and members of Demeter can learn, work and volunteer. Demeter has volunteered on two different projects at the Station. In 2011 the old lodge kitchen needed a good cleaning and a new refrigerator and hood for the stove. Demeter and Demeter member Linda Harvey donated funds to purchase a new professional kitchen refrigerator and stove hood. Also, a crew of 12 members headed up to the station for a work party. Their efforts resulted in a spotless kitchen and members had a fun time in the northern woods at Kemp Station.
In 2022 Demeter was asked if new curtains for the old cabin by the lake would be a project for Demeter to work on. A group of ten members headed north in late September ready for the challenge. It was a beautiful fall week and after much measuring, cutting, pressing and sewing, the cabin had 14 new curtains!
In addition to the time spent together on this project, the group had time for a tour of the station led by Professor Scott Bowe, the station director. We were housed in the new lodge Meade Hall with a dining area and workspace for sewing that have a majestic view of Tomahawk Lake.
There was a job for everyone: Designers, cutters, pressers, sewers, dishwashers, installers and of course those assigned to the preparation and serving of each meal. By mid-afternoon on Saturday the project was done and everyone headed home with good memories of how beautiful and special Kemp Station is and the time spent getting to know each other over four days. Visiting during a meal, sitting by the fire, or playing a new card game offered time to just relax and catch up with each other’s lives and deepen friendships.
