Newsletter August 2024

Welcome all new and returning members! We have some great activities planned for this year.

But first, thank you to Laura Hernandez, our 2023/2024 president. She led Demeter through a very challenging year. Thanks to her great leadership, Demeter is, and will continue to be, a great organization.

Our first event, our annual Corn Roast, will be held Sept. 4 at the Lakeview Park in Middleton (details inserted). Please plan to attend and meet the new CALS faculty members, their families and the students who have received scholarships, internships and grants from Demeter. You’ll also be able to reconnect with friends you may not have seen since the last Corn Roast. Other exciting events are being planned – please watch future newsletters for details.

Our next board meeting will be held Sept. 26, at the West Madison Agricultural Research Station, 8502 Mineral Point Road, Verona. All Demeter members are invited to attend any or all these meetings. We are a volunteer-run organization and value everyone’s input. The entire schedule of board meetings will be included in the Demeter directory. We look forward to seeing you all.

Demeter members are very generous, and many students have benefited from our scholarships, internships and grants. In addition, we have a Sewing Group which makes and donates caps and scarves for cancer patients at the University Hospital in Madison and a gardening group that plants bulbs in the Allen Centennial Garden on campus. None of this would be possible without our wonderful members. We currently do not have a Vice President – please consider donating some of your time. We have just four meetings per year and I would be happy to discuss the job description if you are interested. Volunteers are essential if Demeter is to continue to be a strong and viable organization.

THANK YOU!

Candee Craven, president
